Steeped in history, Charleston anchors the Lowcountry with Southern charm. This harbor city's past lingers in its cobblestone streets and antebellum town houses and historic buildings. You can also shop for everything from antiques to chic fashions, soak up modern and classical arts, or day-trip to the beaches and marshes.
Charleston's temperate climate makes recreation and outdoor activities particularly popular with residents and visitors alike. Whether you're looking to spend a day at the beach, in one of the pristine national forests or on a rolling fairway, the city offers plenty of recreation options.
You'll have to get out of town a bit to find a beach, but there are several to choose from. Most are located on the coastal islands that surround Charleston Harbor and run southwest of town. Folly Beach—just 10 minutes south of Charleston—is the closest. It's a good location for fishing, swimming, waterskiing and sailing, although our favorite activity there is crabbing. Note: Many areas of Folly Beach have suffered from beach erosion, and the tides are strong.
Other nearby public beaches include Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island and Edisto Beach State Park. Kiawah Island has public beach access at Beachwalker Park. |
