Savannah is an excellent starting point for day trips. Close to the city are a few good beaches for example in Hilton Head Island or Beaufort. If you plan to golf on courses in the area, especially at Hilton Head, keep a watch for alligators as they do frequent the ponds on many golf courses.
For history buffs, Fort Pulaski is an great historic fort. Further down the coasts are more forts, e.g. on St. Simons Island.
